For over twenty years, Kennerly Architecture + Planning has made design and construction of innovative mixed and multi-family buildings a cornerstone of our practice.
With each project, whether urban or rural, we believe in providing beautiful spaces and buildings which integrate well within the larger framework of the project’s context while maintaining a high level of design quality and environmental sustainability.
SBE certification: We are a certified Micro and Woman-Owned Local Business Enterprise in the City of San Francisco.
Starting with smaller multi-unit infill buildings, our work has grown to include award-winning mixed-use projects on challenging infill and brown-field sites throughout the Bay Area. Working at a range of scales from homes to high rises, interior design to urban planning, such as the Civic Center Public Realm Plan, the firm has developed a reputation for the thoughtful integration of program, constraints and high-design aspiration.
Our team consists of talented and experienced architects and designers with deep personal experience in housing, institutional, commercial, and public spaces. We provide intensive principal involvement at all phases, yielding efficient decision-making and insightful design concepts throughout the design process.
Inclusion, Belonging & Building the Pipelines
Context represents not only the physical fabric but also the sociological systems in a culture and a place. These systems manifest themselves in the built environment – as architects and urban planners we can contribute to the important work of advancing social justice initiatives to combat ableism, racism, sexism, and environmental injustice.
A challenge for diversity in the profession of architecture is the shortage of architects who identify as people of color, therefore some of the most important work we all need to do is increase the educational pipelines. We are actively involved in programs that give young children and teens in disadvantaged communities the exposure and opportunities within the profession.
This work is urgent, and we are committed to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within our firm, within the profession, and through each project.
Sustainability & Resilience
Sustainable design is a passion of the firm and is integral to good design. Well-designed buildings use less energy and cost less to operate over the long term. They enhance comfort, help occupants stay healthy and take pride in their home.
Our approach identifies priorities and values with the client early in the design process, then builds upon this work to integrate strategies into the design, rather than post apply them. Specialized areas of focus within the firm include Building Sciences / Passive design, Rain-water harvesting and retention, Renewable energy, and Healthy Building as it relates to materials, assemblies, and methods.
